Grievance Process for Grade Disputes

Summary

The College provides an informal process to help students and faculty resolve grade disputes before a formal appeal is considered.

Body

The College provides an informal process to help students and faculty resolve grade disputes before a formal appeal is considered.

Faculty members are responsible for issuing grades based on their professional evaluation of a student’s performance, participation, and the quality and quantity of completed work. However, students who believe a grade was issued incorrectly and can support their concern with written documentation may seek review through the informal grievance process.

Step 1: Contact the Instructor

  • The student must request a conference with the instructor(s) involved within 30 calendar days after the end of the term in which the grade was issued.
  • During this meeting, the student and instructor will review the concern and attempt to resolve the issue.
  • If both parties agree to the terms of a grade change or resolution, the matter is considered resolved.

Step 2: Contact the School Chair (If Needed)

  • If the student disagrees with the outcome of the discussion, or is not comfortable speaking directly with the instructor, the student should contact the appropriate School Chair.
  • The School Chair may arrange a meeting with the student and the instructor in an effort to resolve the grade dispute.
  • If the issue is resolved at this level, no further action is required.

Formal Grade Appeal

If the grade dispute remains unresolved after the informal grievance process, the student may move forward by completing the Formal Grade Change form available on the Appeals Form page in the Records section, in accordance with College policy.

Important Notes

  • The informal grievance process must be completed before a formal grade appeal will be considered.
  • Requests submitted after the 30‑day time frame may not be eligible for review.
  • Supporting documentation is required for all grade disputes.
